Amd Opteron Cpu will an am2 cpu fit in a am2+ socket or even a am3?
hi i'm thinking of getting a amd opteron for gaming but i want a motherboard with a 790 or 770 chip set?
Thanks in advance,
Jack
AMD motherboards aren't based on chipsets.. they are labeled as amd, amd+, amd 2, and amd 3.
Most of the motherbaords are labeled with a 770 or 780 front side bus speed ( which is where you are getting the info) Go with the 790 rating on an amd+ or amd2+ motherboard and you'll be able to run SLI or Crossfire mode with multiple graphic cards and have no problems running a phenom series CPU if you want to upgrade in the future or currently since they are really starting to come down on price.
I'm running the amd phenom black edition 3.2GHz and overclocked to 3.8GHZ ( water cooled) with the 790 frontside bus and 2 ATi 4870 HD graphic cards 1.0Ghz DDR2 in crossfire mode ( which is what amd calls the dragon platform)
and it has me envied by my friends
The AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform is the server platform you can count on as real-world workloads become increasingly complex and demanding. Based on the next-generation AMD Direct Connect Architecture 2.0 with up to 48 total cores in a 4P configuration, this platform more than doubles the memory bandwidth, and provides nearly 2x the I/O bandwidth of previous generation 2P and 4P servers, helping your business tackle complex jobs with greater throughput, exceptional value and readiness to scale.
New AMD-P 2.0 Power Savings Features: Ultra-low power platforms provide power efficiency beyond just the processor, for both 1P and 2P server configurations. APML (Advanced Platform Management Link) provides an interface for processor and systems management monitoring and controlling of system resources such as platform power consumption via p-state limits and CPU thermals to closely monitor power and cooling. Link Width PowerCap which changes all 16-bit links to 8-bit links can help power conscious customers improve performance-per-watt. AMD CoolSpeed Technology reduces p-states when a temperature limit is reached to allow a server to operate if the processor’s thermal environment exceeds safe operational limits. When C1E is enabled, the cores, southbridge and memory controller enter a sleep state that can equate to significant power savings in the datacenter depending on system configuration. LV-DDR3 memory support helps to reduce overall system power consumption. Direct Connect Architecture 2.0: Dual Channel DDR3 Memory enables improved overall system performance and investment protection compared to earlier technologies. R/U-DDR3 Memory up to 1333MHz enables improved overall system performance compared to earlier memory technologies. HyperTransport Technology Assist [HT Assist] helps increases HyperTransport technology efficiency by reducing probe traffic and resolving probe issues. HyperTransport 3.0 Technology (HT3) with increased speed over prior generations, up to 6.4GT/s helps improve overall system balance and scalability. AMD-V 2.0 supports I/O level virtualization to provide direct control of device by a VM7 and improve I/O performance within a virtual machine.
